Just when the city of Ferguson, Mo., thought its troubles were fading away, the Department of Justice is considering a lawsuit against Ferguson’s police department, sources tell CNN.
The DOJ reportedly will not charge officer Darren Wilson, but is preparing a lawsuit against the Ferguson police department over racially discriminatory policing if the department does not agree to make changes. Recent allegations about discriminatory ticketing practices have increased scrutiny of the troubled police department and could make their way into the lawsuit if the DOJ follows through.
Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday that he expects to release details of the DOJ’s Ferguson investigation before he leaves office in the next few weeks.
Asked for comment, Ferguson police Chief Thomas Jackson told CNN, “I have received nothing new. Everything they suggested in the past has been reasonable and we have tried to comply.”
The DOJ would request court supervision to keep Ferguson police accountable for their treatment of minorities.
