Two of Egypt’s most widely read newspapers have published cartoons indirectly blaming ISIS’ existence or actions on the U.S. and Israel.

State-owned Al-Ahram published a cartoon on Wednesday with the phrase, “America after the slaughtering of our sons.” It was referring to the recent beheadings of 21 Egyptian Christians at the hands of ISIS in Libya.

Egyptian newspaper, Al-Ahram published this cartoon on February 18, 2015.

Using somewhat confusing imagery, a hand is panting knives in the shape and style of the American flag. Jewish Stars of David have replaced stars representing U.S. states.

According to Middle East analyst for Al Araby TV, Mohamed Elmenshawy, this cartoon indirectly blames America for what happened in Libya for two reasons. First, the U.S. participated in overthrowing former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi and left a power vacuum. Second, there is a narrative in Egypt that America has not supported its efforts to counter terrorism.

“The easy target always is the United States,” said Elmenshawy. “People love it. They are used to it.”

Another Egyptian newspaper, Al-Masry Al-Youm, published the Arabic-language acronym for ISIS in the shape of a Jewish menorah on Feb. 5. On Tuesday, it again published the ISIS acronym but linked to “USA.”
