Eighty percent of NYPD officers who attended special training because of the death of Eric Garner think the whole thing was a giant “waste of time,” a top NYPD source tells the New York Post.

Garner, an unarmed black man who police say was illegally selling cigarettes, died following a struggle where a police officer put him in a choke hold. Though the officer involved was not indicted, the NYPD still had a few measures of penance, including three days of retraining for officers.

But that training was overall a huge flop, according to officers.

The top NYPD official told the Post that the training cost $35 million and that eight out of 10 officers gave it negative reviews.

In fact, during marathon lectures that lasted up to eight hours, some cops reportedly fell asleep. After two days of lectures, they learned different techniques to use instead of the choke hold.

The training came after Garner’s death sparked protests and widespread condemnation of the NYPD officer who was video taped putting Garner in a choke hold before his death.

In the video of the incident, Garner repeatedly can be heard saying “I can’t breathe” as police pile onto him. The short three words became a rallying cry for a larger movement protesting police use of excessive force, particularly against blacks.

So far, the NYPD has retrained 4,000 cops with another 16,000 scheduled.

There is no word yet on if they will bring pillows and blankets for training.
