Scott Walker received an unexpected boost from an unexpected face Thursday as he looks to launch a potential campaign for the Republican nomination in 2016.

In an appearance on “Morning Joe,” Piers Morgan talked up the Wisconsin governor’s chances of taking the White House, telling host Joe Scarborough that a matchup between Walker and Hillary Clinton “would benefit the Republicans.”

The former CNN host also remarked that Walker is “playing a very clever game” in the lead up to 2016.

“The Republicans at the moment are having a little battle. I actually think Scott Walker is playing a very clever game. I’ve always thought he was a smart guy,” Morgan said. “You can see the Chris Christie bubble is gone. He’s got a big battle to get back. If I was a betting man right now, I think someone like Scott Walker against Hillary Clinton is a very interesting matchup, which I think would benefit the Republicans.”

Meanwhile, Morgan was not as kind to Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee. Morgan, now an editor-at-large for the Daily Mail, told Scarborough that Clinton “goes to Christmas past” and is “no spring chicken” at this point.

“I think the problem Hillary Clinton’s got — the Republicans are clearly going to have someone new and fresh, interesting and exciting just because that’s what they are going to have. Hillary Clinton slightly goes to Christmas past for many people,” Morgan said. “She didn’t beat Barack Obama. She’s no spring chicken, and I say that in the nicest possible way. And if I were the Democrats, I would be thinking, ‘we’ve got to be very careful here, that we don’t put all of our eggs into the Hillary Clinton basket and we end up with somebody who could actually lose.'”
