The U.K. banned an Israeli tourism advertisement suggesting the Old City of Jerusalem is part of Israel, because it would lead consumers “into taking a transactional decision that they would otherwise not have taken.”

The brochure included a photograph showing the golden Old City landmark and Muslim shrine the Dome of the Rock, with the modern buildings of Western Jerusalem in the background.

Text on the image read: “Everyone falls for the Old City, with its narrow (and car-free) alleys, teeming pilgrims and bazaar-like buzz.”

The Israeli Government Tourist Office said the advert wasn’t implying the area was part of Israel.

After Israel won the 1967 war against several Arab armies, it gained control of the Old City from Jordan. However, administration of this mostly-Palestinian populated section of Jerusalem remains controversial. The Israeli government considers it part of the capital city, but the international community says it’s occupied Palestinian territory.
