Indonesian Clothing Company Totally Sorry For This Sexist Slur

An Indonesian company that manufactures sportswear has apologized for stamping an unusual set of washing instructions on the jersey of Pusamania Borneo, a soccer club on the island of Borneo.

“WASHING INSTRUCTIONS: GIVE THIS JERSEY TO YOUR WOMAN,” the small, all-caps lettering inside the jersey explain. Then, a line below, “IT’S HER JOB” is printed in bold.

The logo for the manufacturer, Salvo Sports, is printed above the instructions.

The company issued the apology on Sunday, reports The Jakarta Globe, an English-language daily newspaper.

As it happens, Sunday was International Women’s Day. (RELATED: The Daily Caller’s Valentine’s Day Gift Guide For The Women In Your Life)

“The message is simply, instead of washing it in the wrong way you might as well give it to a lady because they are more capable,” Salvo representative wrote in the apology, according to the Globe.

“There’s no intention to humiliate women,” the company explained. Instead, Salvo said, its goal was to tell male jersey wearers to “learn from women on how to take care of clothes because” women “pay attention to details” and “are more knowledgeable/experts on such matters.”

“We apologize profusely for any miss-interpretations,” the company concluded, presumably with the pun intended.

The instructions were met with furor on social media. For example:

Viola (@veeola) is a prolific Twitter user from Jakarta (though she identifies the city as Batavia, Jakarta’s name for over 300 years when it was part of the Dutch East Indies)

Pusamania Borneo begins its Indonesian Super League season next month. The team won the Liga Indonesia Premier Division in 2014.
