Hillary Clinton faced difficult questions Tuesday during her press conference at the United Nations about using a private email as secretary of state, but the first question she took was a laughable softball.

The first question at United Nations press conferences traditionally goes to the head of the U.N. Correspondents Association, or the next-highest official if he or she isn’t present. As a result, the first question at the Clinton presser was an obscure reporter from a foreign news outlet: Kahraman Haliscelik with Turkish Television. (VIDEO: ‘The Server Will Remain Private’: Hillary Won’t Allow Oversight Of Emails)

Haliscelik began with a healthy dose of brown-nosing. “Madame Secretary, on behalf of the U.N. Correspondence Association, thank you very much for your remarks, and it’s wonderful to see you here again.”

From there, he moved to his garbled first question, which contained a confusing double negative. “Madam Secretary, why did you opt out not using two devices at the time? Obviously, if this didn’t come out, you wouldn’t — probably wouldn’t become an issue.”

Grammar aside, it might have been a decent question… if Clinton hadn’t already answered it in her opening remarks. “I opted for convenience to use my personal email account, which was allowed by the State Department, because I thought it would be easier to carry just one device for my work and for my personal emails instead of two,” Clinton said.

But Haliscelik had a second question up his sleeve, insinuating that Clinton was only facing scrutiny because she was a woman. “And my second follow-up question is, if you were a man today, would all this fuss being made be made?”

Clinton smiled at the question. “Well, I will — I will leave that to others to answer.”
