Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse dubbed the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email account while secretary of state “bizarre” when talking to a reporter from the Washington Post.

“She used the wrong e-mail account — duh-dah! It’s ridiculous,” Whitehouse told the Washington Post. “I’m not indulging this bizarre fetish.”

After waiting more than a week to respond to the story, Clinton tried to take a lighthearted approach in what was widely regarded as a disastrous press conference Tuesday. She said she set up a private account on a private server out of “convenience,” and regrets the “mistake.” (RELATED: Steyn: Hillary’s Email Excuse Doesn’t Pass The Smell Test)

Democrats were initially unsure how to respond, because the Clinton camp didn’t respond to most requests for talking points, reported the Washington Post. But the Whitehouse has apparently picked up on the advice Clinton gave a political group set up to defend her — play the story off as silly.

“This is totally artificial,” Whitehouse told the Washington Post. “You guys have lost your minds on this.” (RELATED: New Report Casts Doubt On Hillary’s Justification For Secret Email Use)

Other Democratic operatives said she needs to announce her campaign for president as soon as possible, so she can change the conversation from the emails to the economy.

“Democrats are really worried about her,” Hank Sheinkopf, a strategist and former Clinton employee told the Washington Post. “They want to be sure that she can win. They’re not used to this anxiety, because they’ve had eight years of winners.”
