Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker told Fox and Friends Sunday, in response to news that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is declaring his 2016 candidacy, that it is a good thing that other “great choices” are jumping into the 2016 GOP presidential fray.

However, the Wisconsin Republican maintained that the country would be best served by an outside the beltway governor with “big, bold ideas.”

“I think for Republican voters and Americans, generally, it’s great to have many excellent choices. What I hear when I travel this country is three simple things. Voters tell me overwhelmingly they want a new fresh face,” he told Fox and Friends hosts Tucker Carlson and Scott Brown.

Walker went further saying, “We’re going to take on someone from the past in former Sec. of State Clinton. We need a face for the future.  Secondly they say we need someone with big, bold ideas from outside of Washington. And third, the thing I keep hearing over and over again is they want someone with a proven track record—someone who doesn’t just talk about it but has done it.”

He added, “That’s why I think there’s incredible interest about the possibility of us getting in the race. If there are others out there, so much the better to have many great choices out there, but I think being a governor with a proven record is certainly something voters are looking at very closely.”

A Feb. 23 poll asking Texans about potential 2016 candidates conducted by  University of Texas/Texas Tribute survey, showed Walker just 1 percentage point behind Cruz.

Cruz, according to the Houston Chronicle, is expected to announce his candidacy at Liberty University in Virginia on Monday. Cruz, who is reportedly attempting to raise $40 to $50 million, will skip creating a presidential exploratory committee and directly launch his campaign.

Walker has yet to establish an exploratory committee but is currently traveling to key primary states with an organization called Our American Revival. Those working in the group for Walker are likely to become part of the governor’s campaign team, should he announce his candidacy for president.
