British students attending a women’s conference at a National Union of Students meeting on Tuesday were urged to refrain from engaging in any clapping, because the sound of hands smacking together was “triggering” anxiety attacks for some of the women in attendance.

Instead, delegates were told by rely on less psychologically devastating “jazz hands.”

For those who are unfamiliar, this is clapping:

And this is “jazz hands”:

The National Union of Students Women’s Campaign is holding a three-day conference in Solihull, England. Just a few hours after the conference began, a student attendee from Oxford University complained that various acts of applause at the event were causing her distress. Accordingly, the official Twitter account of the NUS Women’s Campaign sent out a request that attendees cease such actions at once.

Clapping wasn’t the only behavior that endangered the fragile psyches of attendees. Another tweet from NUS warned that excessive “whooping” was making the event “inaccessible.”

“We strive to make NUS events accessible and enjoyable for all, so each request is considered,” an NUS representative told the Express.

The requests predictably aroused a storm of mockery on Twitter, which wasn’t helped by how some attendees responded to it. One such attendee, Sarah Gillborn, tweeted about how she wanted support from feminists at the event’s “self-care room,” another word for the “safe spaces” that have become ubiquitous in various circles of student activism.

When they weren’t grappling with how to hold a meeting without inflicting devastating psychological damage on somebody, conference attendees approved a battery of very left-oriented resolutions.

Motion 504 calls for the abolition of taxes on tampons and other feminine hygiene products. Motion 302 demands the institution of a universal basic income sufficient to afford not just food and housing but also Internet access, a mobile phone and “leisure activities.” Motion 512, which has yet to come up for consideration, will demand that gay white men stop “appropriating” the mannerisms of black women.
