Confused DC Council Hopefuls Realize They’re Boycotting Wrong Organization, Double Down Anyhow

Candidates in the crowded field vying for the DC Council seat in Ward 4 came together Monday to boycott a straw poll and a candidate they say has an unfair advantage.

Brandon Todd has been leading the field in the Ward 4 race for some time, and Will Sommer at the Washington City Paper reported that nine of his rivals will boycott an upcoming straw poll being organized by the Ward 4 Democrats, a group run by Todd.

The only problem, though, is that the straw poll is not being run by the Ward 4 Democrats. The boycotting candidates say they want the D.C. Democratic State Committee to be in charge of the poll, though that group is actually running the event.

When asked if there are still plans to boycott the event, even though it is being run by the neutral organization the candidates said they want, at least two of the candidates are doubling down on the original statement.

“Yes, I stand by my initial decision to boycott,” Leon T. Andrews said on Twitter.

Edwin Powell, another of the candidates who signed the statement also said he would continue to boycott the event.

In a statement released by the candidates, they say they want neutrality and credibility to be hallmarks in this election, and if a candidate in the election is in charge of the group running the poll it is not fair to the other candidates.

“Fundamental fairness and credibility require that only neutral parties, i.e., the DC Democratic State Committee, conduct and oversee the Forum,” the group said in the statement.
