A man armed with two box cutters sliced a Tennessee store owner on the neck during a robbery attempt Monday night but didn’t get much further.

Police say the owner of Discount Tobacco and Beer in La Vergne was taking out the trash at around 10:30 p.m. when a man approached him.

“He came out from behind [and] asked if they were open. They were not, so he attacked the owner with his box cutters,” said Kathy Tyson of the La Vergne Police Department.

The store owner, who has not been identified, was cut on the neck but pulled out his legally concealed gun and fired one shot, hitting the attempted robber in the chest.

The suspect fled the store after being shot. A K-9 unit found him next door, dead.

The store owner did what he had to protect himself, police said. He is not currently facing charges and was treated at the scene.
