Islamic School Won’t Let Girls Run Over Fears They Will Lose ‘Virginity’

The principal of an Islamic school in Australia has banned primary school-aged girls from running in cross country events out of fears that the activity may result in the loss of “virginity,” according to former teachers.

The school is Al-Taqwa College in a pleasant suburb of Melbourne, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. The principal is Omar Hallak.

“The principal holds beliefs that if females run excessively, they may ‘lose their virginity’,” a teacher’s letter to a regulatory agency for the Australian state of Victoria stated.

“The principal believes that there is scientific evidence to indicate that if girls injure themselves, such as break their leg while playing soccer, it could render them infertile.”

Hallak only intervened after the girls had practiced for weeks because, he allegedly said, he had not known that the school over which he presides had a girls cross country team.

“I look back on my time at Al-Taqwa with frustration and anger, which is how I felt most of the time while I was working there,” the discouraged teacher wrote. “I did my best to stay committed to the students however in the end, I was unable to provide the same opportunities to students that I was given when I was at primary school, more than 20 years ago.”

The Morning Herald also has an image of a long, handwritten letter signed by “cross country girls.” The heartbreaking letter complains that the students “were practicing so hard” and were “very excited to represent our school.”

The students also said their own parents “think that girls and boys should both be allowed to participate equally,” according to the Morning Herald.

Not all parents believe there is a running ban, though. One parent of two girls at Al-Taqwa College claimed that her daughters “do basketball, they run around the school, they do everything,” according to the Herald.

The skeptical mom suggested that the real problem could be with a teacher unhappy over getting fired.

Al-Taqwa principal Hallak is also under investigation for telling students that the formation of the Islamic State (also called ISIS) was a conspiracy by Western nations to gain control over Middle Eastern oil. (RELATED: Don’t Be Alarmed But Radical Muslims Just Declared Their Own Empire)
