The Israeli military launched airstrikes on Sunday night, killing four militants who were trying to plant an explosive device in the disputed Golan Heights on Israel’s border with Syria.

Israel has successfully avoided major conflict with jihadis along its shared border with Syria as the country descended into a hotbed of militancy, and the militants’ affiliation is unknown, according to CNN.

This isn’t the first step the Israeli military has taken against militants in the Golan Heights. In January, Israeli airstrikes killed an Iranian general and members of Lebanese terror group, Hezbollah. Operatives were reportedly fighting al-Qaida-affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria.

Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy force, is fighting to support the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. But its militants are also extended into Iraq, battling the Islamic State, and potentially aiding Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen amid the Saudi-led airstrike campaign.

The Israeli military has taken steps to keep Hezbollah from acquiring advanced capabilities to launch attacks. Last Saturday, Israeli jets reportedly attacked weapons storehouses in Syria, preventing Hezbollah from receiving weapons systems marked for delivery to the organization.

“There is no doubt that Hezbollah is now the military force of most concern to Israel,” according to Amos Harel, a correspondent for Haaretz. But despite threats, Israeli leaders should avoid “being dragged into the inferno that is consuming Syria and so severely threatening the unity of its neighbors,” he added.
