A Huey helicopter carrying 6 U.S. Marines in a mountainous area in Nepal suddenly vanished Tuesday, but it has apparently just been spotted north of the nation’s capital, Katmandu.

It will take some time for authorities to reach the site, Andrew Tilghman of Military Times reports. For now, officials are hoping that the sudden disappearance doesn’t mean that the helicopter had a crash landing. Last radio contact revealed that the helicopter was having fuel problems.

“Right now we are hopeful that there was no crash,” Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren told Marine Corps Times. “There has been no [emergency] beacon, no other signs — no flames, no smoke, no hole in the ground — to indicate that there was a crash.”

The devastating earthquake in Nepal prompted the presence of 300 personnel from the U.S. military to assist with humanitarian work, and the helicopter carrying the 6 marines was part of that effort.

While the first earthquake struck some time ago, a second 7.3 earthquake hit Nepal on Tuesday, the day the helicopter went missing, killing at minimum 65 people and leveling buildings.

It had just dropped off some supplies and was heading to a second location before contact was lost. An immediate search was conducted of the last reported location of the craft, but nothing was found at the time.

That all changed, following information that the helicopter, from the Marine Light Attack Helicopter squadron 469, was found in the Tamakoshi region.
