An 18-year-old student at the University of Denver is in a dire state after his college sent him in for drug detox and he wound up paralyzed, according to 9News.
The student, who is currently unnamed, reportedly arrived back at his dorm room early Sunday morning severely impaired. The school’s security team was called, and they in turn summoned a mobile detox vehicle operated by Denver CARES, a subdivision of Denver Health that deals with substance abuse and addiction. The student was walked over to the vehicle and then spirited away for detox treatment.
However, on Wednesday, administrators received a call from the boy’s distressed parents. Since waking up in detox, the student has apparently been paralyzed, and the cause is unknown. The school has insisted its security team followed proper procedures and doesn’t know how the student’s paralysis might have come about.
“We don’t know what happened between the time he left campus and where he is now,” DU spokesperson Will Jones told 9NEWS Tuesday. “We don’t know what happened between the time he left campus and where he is now. All we know is that when he woke up, he was paralyzed, and he doesn’t know how it happened.”
“We’re trying to do everything we can to help this family deal with this tragedy,” he added.
The student’s current situation is unclear, though Denver Health has said the boy is in serious condition. Any further information, it says, cannot be disclosed due to the objections of the boy’s family.
“We would caution the public about forming any conclusions about this situation,” Denver Health said in a statement given to 9News Wednesday night.
The family thus far has said little, but told 9News that they have many unanswered questions about what happened to their sons and how his situation was handled.
