Coloradoan Tanner Brownlee wanted to win the auction for a Dodge Charger that belonged to his now deceased father — a police officer who was killed in the line of duty during a 2010 police chase — but when someone outbid him, he was devastated.

That’s when a local rancher walked over and gave him the keys.

The rancher, Steve Wells, bought the car at an auction to raise money for Concerns Of Police Survivors, an organization that helps families of fallen police officers, ABC 7 News Denver reports.

Weld County Deputy Sam Brownlee was killed in 2010 during a police chase when Tanner was 15, and the car is one of the few things left to remind him of his dad.

He started a GoFundMe page so he and his brother Chase could buy the car at the auction but only raised about $3,000. Bids for the Dodge Charger quickly topped $10,000.

Wells bought the car for $60,000 and Tanner’s heart sank. But when Wells walked over and handed Tanner the keys, applause broke out and Tanner broke down in tears. He hugged Wells.

Tanner said he had no idea the car was being bought for him and had only known Wells for a few days.

“He put time and work into it. He drove it every day, and so to have something like that will be bigger than a lot of things I could have gotten,” Tanner told 9 News.
