Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL, signed a deal to play for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League on Friday morning.

Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was cut by St. Louis after training camp and signed by the Cowboys before being eventually waved in October.

Last year, Sam was the target of a derogatory Instagram post by Alouettes wide receiver Arland Bruce.

Bruce was fined an undisclosed amount for the post and was let go by Montreal this offseason.
