An American man has been killed fighting against ISIS.

The State department and NBC News confirmed Wednesday that 36-year-old Keith Broomfield, a native of Massachusetts, has died.

Broomfield had been fighting alongside the Kurdish People’s Protection Union, or YPG, in their continued battle against the Islamic State. It’s thought his death occurred near the city of Kobani, located in Northern Syria close to the Turkish border.

“I didn’t want him to go but I didn’t have a choice in the matter,” Broomfield’s mother told NBC News. It’s suspected that Broomfield is the first American paramilitary solider to die fighting with YPG.
