More than two weeks since two convicted murderers pulled off a Shawshank-style escape from a New York prison, a new lead may finally lead the cops to the killers.

Multiple reports indicate that DNA from either Richard Matt or David Sweat was found in a cabin in upstate New York just 25 miles from the prison. Police are scouring the area now.

A witness came upon the cabin, which was believed to be unoccupied, and saw a man run out the back. Boots, bloody socks, toiletries, peanut butter and a water jug were found in the area as well, the Plattsburgh Press Republican reports.

The search had previously focused on Friendship, a town in the southwest part of the state. A deluge of tips and reports of sightings have had authorities searching all over, but this report of DNA evidence is one of the most promising tips authorities have shared.

It is possible another tip, such as the Friendship sighting 300 miles away from the DNA evidence, is credible and the inmates have split up.

While a number of prison employees are being investigated, Clinton correctional officer Gene Palmer, an employee of 18 years who had daily contact with Sweat and Matt, was placed on leave by the prison. Police searched his home Friday.

Authorities suspect the pair of escapees may be using trains to travel.
