The party of Russian president Vladimir Putin, upset by the “gay fever” advancing around the world, has unveiled a new “straight pride” flag to counter the rainbow gay pride flag.
The flag features stylized silhouettes of a mother and father holding hands with their three children. The silhouettes are placed on a background of either blue, red, or white, the colors of the Russian flag. Beneath the family is the phrase “#RealFamily”
The flag is a creation of the Moscow branch of United Russia, the conservative party in control of Russia’s parliament. It was created as a symbol for activists celebrating the Day of Family Love and Faithfulness, a holiday corresponding to a Russian Orthodox feast day honoring marriage.
“This is our answer to same sex marriages, this mockery of the very concept of family,” activist Aleksey Lisovenko said, according to Russia Today. “We must prevent gay fever in our country and support traditional values.”
The flag is inspired by a similar flag used by French opponents of gay marriage. The Russian flag adds an additional child, a move designers say is intended to reflect different Russian values (and perhaps United Russia’s efforts to boost the national birthrate).
