An Islamic State-affiliated group kidnapped more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls last year, and now they are allegedly committing atrocities on its behalf.

Boko Haram abducted the young girls from Chibok village in April of 2014, and although the Nigerian military succeeded in rescuing some girls under the terror group’s control, 219 schoolgirls remain missing. (RELATED: Did Nigeria Just #BringBackOurGirls?)

According to Human Rights Watch, Chibok schoolgirls have been abused, forcibly converted from Christianity to Islam and married off to jihadis.

But an even darker turn in the girls’ lives is being reported by escapees, according to Catherine Powell, an expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, in Defense One.

“Many are allegedly carrying out atrocities on behalf of Boko Haram, including flogging prisoners who are unable to recite the Quran or killing Christian captives,” wrote Powell.

Women are responsible for 15 successful suicide bombings on Boko Haram’s orders, according to a report by the Al Jazeera Center for Studies.

According to a witness interviewed by the BBC, many Chibok girls have been brainwashed and forced to terrorize or even kill for Boko Haram.

The kidnapping sparked a massive social media campaign, marked by the hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls. Michelle Obama became involved in pressuring for the girls’ release, photographed holding a placard with the hashtag.

The terror group frequently kidnaps civilians en masse. In March, jihadis took more than 400 women and children as they fled the city of Damasak.

Boko Haram pledged allegiance to Islamic State earlier this year, aligning itself with the terror group in Iraq and Syria.
