Target is defending itself after the company came under fire Tuesday for selling a shirt that some say is “demeaning towards women.”
The gray t-shirt — sold in the women’s and plus size sections — has the word “TROPHY” printed across the front in large white letters.
Angry customers are calling the company “gross” and “sexist” because they think the shirt “perpetuates rape culture.”
@Target under what circumstances should any human being wear a T-shirt that indicates that they are a "trophy" pic.twitter.com/NXIrg8wbvW

@Target very disappointed in your "Trophy" shirt and your explanation…wedding and engagement shirts? #imnobodystrophy

The fact @Target has a a bridal shirt that says "Trophy" on it AND in the juniors section sickens me. How can that seem like a good idea?

But many others said that shoppers are simply being overly sensitive.
Lets be real here – no woman that considers herself a "trophy wife" would buy a t-shirt at Target.

People are too easily offended these days. A @Target #TROPHY shirt? How long until clothing is exclusively dyed black or white? #NOHUMOR

@target. Kudos to you on your trophy shirt. People need to stop being so PC and lighten up.

OMG fat unhappy housewives find a damn hobby! If a bitch wants to wear a "Trophy" shirt who are you to tell her no? #target #biggerproblems

If I were married I would have no problem wearing a shirt that said Trophy! #target #notsexist #stopspeakingforme #getoverit #toosensitive

Target also defended its decision to sell the shirt.
“It is never our intention to offend anyone and we always appreciate receiving feedback form our guests,” Target said in a statement issued Tuesday.
“The shirt you’re describing is part of a collection of engagement and wedding shirts that are available in our women’s and plus size departments. The collection also included shirts that say ‘Team Bride,’ ‘Mrs.’ and ‘Bride.’ These shirts are intended as a fun wink and we have received an overwhelmingly positive response from our guests.”
