Russian President Vladimir Putin is convinced that disgraced FIFA President Sepp Blatter deserves a Nobel Prize.

In a recent interview Putin said, “We all know the situation developing around Mr. Blatter right now. I don’t want to go into details but I don’t believe a word about him being involved in corruption personally.”

“I think people like Mr. Blatter or the heads of big international sporting federations, or the Olympic Games, deserve special recognition. If there is anyone who deserves the Nobel Prize, it’s those people,” he said, according to ESPN.

FIFA and Blatter have been heavily criticized in recent months due to large scale corruptions allegations. In June Blatter announced that he would be stepping down as FIFA president, effective in February 2016.

Former FIFA officials have come clean saying that bribes were accepted in the selection process for both the 1998 and 201o World Cups, via CNN. Both events took place while Blatter was in office.

Putin would like to minimize the significance of the corruption scandal, as Russia is set to host the upcoming World Cup in 2018.
