Hillary Clinton offered an explanation to reporters in New Hampshire on Monday for why she went to the wedding of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump a decade ago.
“I didn’t know him that well,” Clinton said. “I mean, I knew him. I knew him, and I happened to be planning to be in Florida and I thought it would be fun to go to his wedding because it’s always entertaining. Now that he’s running for president, it’s a little more troubling.”
Clinton attended Trump’s 2005 wedding to his third wife, Melania. Clinton, who was in the senate at the time, attended the ceremony solo but sat in the front row. Husband Bill showed up for the reception, which was hosted at one of Trump’s resorts.
Clinton was quizzed Monday about attending Trump’s wedding after she weighed in on the real estate billionaire’s recent comments about Fox News host Megyn Kelly. Trump criticized Kelly for being tough on him during Thursday’s first GOP debate. He said on Friday that Kelly looked like she was bleeding from her eyes and “bleeding from her wherever.”
Trump has also been asked about his friendliness to the Clintons. He donated to Hillary’s senate campaigns and also gave the Clinton Foundation $100,000. He has said that made that hefty donation so that the Clintons would show up at his wedding.
