The marijuana-related business market in the District of Columbia is booming after the city legalized possession of pot in February.
Companies that provides cannabis-infused drinks for cocktail parties, consultants that sell and rent the equipment needed to grow marijuana indoors, even an Uber-for-bongs delivers bongs, pipes and lighters right to the front door of D.C. residents, are all taking hold in the district, The Washington Post reports.
The legalized weed is a hot topic for new growers in the city who take to social media to show off their new products and share photos or ask for advice.
The district residents, with a new-found affinity for growing pot, have used Facebook groups to set up seed swaps and organize “safety meetings,” where they get together at someone’s home and smoke marijuana together.
While it is legal to possess up to two ounces of marijuana in the city for personal use, it is still illegal to sell it or possess it on federal land, which includes federally subsidized housing.
According to the Post, legal sales of medical marijuana in D.C. are also spiking. The city currently has five medical marijuana dispensaries and seven cultivation centers, and those numbers are expected to grow as demand grows.(RELATED: You Can Now Buy A Bong From The Guy Who Legalized Weed)
The D.C. Council recently passed an emergency law that increased the number of plants cultivators can grow from 95 to 1,000 in order to keep up with the backlog of people seeking medical marijuana.
The number of medical marijuana patients registered with the D.C. Department of Health shot up from 738 patients in July of 2014 to nearly 4,000 as of July 27 of this year.
Under the current D.C. marijuana law, D.C. residents who are at least 21 years of age can grow up to six weed plants on their personal property and can give away up to one ounce of pot at a time.
