Under Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York City’s spiking crime rate has called a once-common volunteer “police” force back into action.

The volunteer law enforcement squad will patrol New York City’s Central Park to quell a recent spike in crime. The group, called The Guardian Angels, points to a 26 percent increase in the park this year, The Associated Press reports.

It is the latest sign that de Blasio is struggling to keep the city together, particularly with policing.

Last December, de Blasio suffered a near-mutiny with his police force. The consensus was that de Blasio did not have their back, so they turned their backs on him during a speech he gave outside the funeral of fallen Officer Wenjian Liu.

This was followed by a near work stoppage, with a sharp decline in tickets and arrests as officers claimed they would only do the absolutely essential police work.

Now, The Guardian Angels, fed up with the crumbling safety of Central Park, are doing what they can to help.

There are 130 Guardian Angel chapters around the world that step in to act as watchmen for struggling communities.

“By making young people part of the solution rather than casting them as part of the problem, The Guardian Angels empowers youth to take pride in their communities and contribute to the safety of their neighborhoods,” the group says on its website.

Things aren’t going so well for the man many New Yorkers once looked to as the progressive savior. On Sunday, The New York Times summarized some of his issues, including alleged nepotism, an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, a botched battle with the taxi-app Uber, and now volunteer police embarrassing the mayor.
