The number of murders in the nation’s capital is nearly 30 percent higher than it was this time last year. A story in the Washington Post pointed out that the violence is spilling into the wealthy Northwest portions of DC.
That is not okay.
Sunday night, the paper posted a story about a man’s “straight up execution” in broad daylight on a busy city street in the Park View neighborhood. The original headline read: “Not even NW is immune as crime surges across D.C.”
A cached copy of the story on NewsDiffs shows that headline changed to just “Crime surges across the district” Monday morning with no update or correction attribution.
The author goes on to describe the rise in the number of gun crimes in neighborhoods like Petworth, Logan Circle and Columbia heights. Originally, he described these neighborhoods as “key to the city’s growth and revitalization.”
Now, those growing neighborhoods are no longer “key,” but were “targeted” for revitalization.
Further down in the story, editors massaged language so as to remove implications that crimes in wealthier parts of the city are more prominent than those committed in poor neighborhoods across the river. (RELATED: Poor Neighborhoods In DC Missing Out On The New Businesses)
Adrian Washington, who runs a development company, is no longer described as “primed to take advantage of gentrification” in the up-and-coming neighborhood where he put up condos, a yoga studio and an organic market.

“We didn’t expect this to be Georgetown,” Washington said of his decision to move his company to Park View. “We knew it was an area in transition,” Washington said. “But over the last few months, we saw things getting worse and worse. More people drunk or high, hanging out all day, some looking like they were selling drugs.”
