Police in Washington, D.C., are now searching for a 10-year-old they say robbed another boy at gunpoint Friday afternoon.

Two boys, one between the ages of eight and 10 years old and another between 13 and 14 pointed a handgun at their victim’s head and demanded he hand over his property, NBC Washington reports.

It was around 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon when the boys rode up on their bikes and stole the boy’s cell phone.

A police report obtained by The Washington Post described one of the robbers as around 4 foot 6 inches, slim with a light black complexion. The other was around 5 foot 3 inches with a high-top haircut and a medium black complexion.

The victim’s mother told NBC Washington she was horrified and angered by the situation.

“I don’t understand why these kids are out here doing this sort of thing,” she said.

The child robbery is just a recent example of the huge spike in violence the district has seen this summer. So far, there have been 97 homicides this year, more than 30 percent higher than the same time last year.

Armed robberies in the city are up almost 20 percent over the same time last year.
