Pope Francis will visit the United States at the end of September, and his first stop will be in Washington, D.C. to meet with President Barack Obama and address Congress.

The pope is expected to arrive in the Capitol at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the Joint Base Andrews military facility, which is located a few miles outside the district in Maryland.

The official papal visit will kick off the following morning, Wednesday, Sept. 23, when the pope heads to the White House for an arrival ceremony with Obama before the two head into a private meeting to speak about various social and economic issues.

After speaking with Obama, Francis will head to a mid-day prayer with United States bishops at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. Then the pope will canonize Junipero Serra at another church in town, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Serra was a Franciscan Friar who started nine Catholic missions in California in the 1700s.

Thursday, the pope will address a joint meeting of Congress on Capitol Hill. Rep. John Boehner invited the pope to speak with Congress last March, and earlier this year, the pope accepted his invitation.

Later in the day, the pope will go to St. Patrick’s Church where he will bless and help feed homeless people who gather at the church around lunch time where they are served free meals.

After feeding the homeless, Francis will head back to the Joint Base Andrews where he will board a flight to New York and continue his tour of the East Coast.

The pope will spend several days in New York before stopping in Philadelphia and then flying back to Rome Sept. 27.
