The Kentucky clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses returned to work Monday, saying she refuses to endorse any same-sex marriage licenses but won’t interfere with them either. She also fought back tears Monday in a press conference where she said that people are not being tolerant enough of her beliefs.

“Are we not big enough, loving enough, and tolerant enough to find a way to accommodate my deeply held religious convictions?” Davis asked in a prepared statement. “While my case may be the most visible right now, there are millions of people in public and private sectors that are in the same position and who also need reasonable accommodations.”

Davis was jailed for almost a week and then released when the rest of the clerk’s office began issuing gay marriage licenses. Upon her release, the judge warned Davis not to interfere with the issuing of gay marriage licenses.

Davis said she wants the marriage licenses to indicate that they are being issued by a different authority, such as the governor or federal court order. That way she would not be officially authorizing the marriage and thus violating her conscience..

She also question whether her deputies have the authority to issue the licenses, as they began doing when she was jailed.

“I don’t want to have this conflict. I don’t want to be in the spotlight. And I certainly don’t want to be a whipping post,” Davis said during the press conference. “I am no hero. I’m just a person that’s been transformed by the grace of God, who wants to work, be with my family. I just want to serve my neighbors quietly without violating my conscience.”
