Vox chief political correspondent Jonathan Allen explained that Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server was designed to keep “both work email and personal email from public view” and that Clinton’s actions not be “terribly surprising.”
Allen, appearing on Monday’s “MSNBC Live” Monday, suggested that it was in Hillary’s nature to set up a “server to protect her email” to protect herself from being attacked “by Republicans, [and] by being under investigation by the media.”
Ayman Mohyeldin: One of the biggest issues dogging the campaign, the issue of e-mail servers. It’s been a major concern for voters. 55% don’t like how she’s handling the scandal according to the this is according to The Washington Post/ABC News Poll” there. 54% think she is covering something up and another 51% believe Clinton broke government regulations. In fact, The Washington Post also reports that the server might not have been wiped clean, meaning that many of the 31,000 deleted emails could be retrieved. Now Clinton says these emails were personal correspondence but you say that the scandal is not likely to change voters’ opinions.
Jonathan Allen: Well, I think the argument that I’m making is if you really know Hillary Clinton, nothing that has come out in this should be terribly surprising. She is pretty secretive after years of being under attack by Republicans, by being under investigation by the media. And ultimately, what she tried to do with this server was try to protect her email. Both work email and personal email from public view. I’m not saying that’s a good thing but I do think that it’s kind of in keeping with the way that Clinton sort of aggressively interprets rules in her way. I think it is something that, you know, is explained in some, at some level by her natural and through nurture her skepticism about the intentions of people who want her information.
