As millions of Americans were waiting for Pope Francis to land at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, the papal plane made a few unexplained loops over rural North Carolina.

According to The Atlantic, a source at Andrews revealed that the plane was deliberately held up because of delays in the motorcade carrying President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

The papal plane was a chartered Alitalia flight from Cuba, where the pope had been visiting for several days. Official schedules gave an official 4:00 time for the welcoming ceremony following a 3:45 landing. The plane ultimately landed approximately five minutes late.

Francis will be in Washington until Thursday evening. He will then be making stops in New York and Philadephia.Inline image 1Follow Ivan Plis on Twitter
