Legendary Irish actor Pierce Brosnan told the Press Association that he expects the next James Bond actor to be a white male.

“Anything is possible for sure, but I think he’ll be male and he’ll be white,” Brosnan said in an interview.

He pointed out that Ian Fleming’s character of Bond is “all man.”

Earlier this year, Anthony Horowitz, the author commissioned by Ian Femling’s estate to write the next Bond novel, made waves when he suggested that black actor Idris Elba was “too street” to play Bond. Elba had been a leading candidate to be the new James Bond, and he would have been the first minority to ever play James Bond. (RELATED: Idris Elba Is Apparently ‘Too Street’ To Play James Bond)

Brosnan didn’t feel that only a white actor had to play James Bond stating, “There’s wonderful black actors out there who could be James Bond, and there’s no reason why you cannot have a black James Bond.”

However, Brosnan doesn’t ever feel that a woman could play the legendary character. “But a female James Bond, no, I think it has to be male. James Bond is a guy, he’s all male. His name is James, his name is James Bond,” Brosnan told the Press Association.

Editor’s note: This story has been corrected to attribute the “too street” comment to Anthony Horowitz.
