South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy is “not interested” in becoming the next speaker of the House, a spokeswoman told The Daily Caller Friday.

Current House Speaker John Boehner announced Friday that he will be resigning from Congress in October.

“Rep. Gowdy has said his time and attention will continue to be devoted to the work assigned to him,” Amanda Duvall, Gowdy’s communications director, told TheDC in an email. “He is not interested in any leadership positions and believes one can have influence without the title.”

Gowdy is currently chairman of the House Select Committee on the Events Surrounding the 2012 Terrorist Attack in Benghazi, and chairman of the subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security. (RELATED: Amash For Speaker? Tea Party Congressman Thanks Outgoing Boehner)
