A staff member in D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office was arrested Tuesday night for distributing crack cocaine and ordered to remain in jail.

Public records show that Lorenzo Sanders is a staff assistant in the mayor’s Office of Religious Affairs and has worked for the mayor since 2012.

Late Tuesday night, SWAT officers busted down Sanders’ door with a sledgehammer and found about 60 grams worth of cocaine in sandwich bags in his toilet, The Washington Post reports.

In addition to the cocaine, police found what they believe to be almost 11 grams of crack cocaine and about a half gram of heroin.

Police also found scales and ski masks, according to the Post.

In a statement, Bowser spokesman Mike Czin said Sanders was a hold-over employee from the previous administration and, since he was not directly appointed by the mayor, he cannot be immediately fired.

Bowser learned of the arrest Wednesday and placed Sanders on administrative leave. She also started the HR process necessary to have him terminated.

“The Bowser Administration does not tolerate employees who violate the public trust. We have made Mr. Sanders’ work space available to the police.”

Court records show that this isn’t Sanders first run-in with the law. In 1985, he was arrested for selling heroin and spent more than four years in jail. In 1983, Sanders was arrested for possession of PCP and sentenced to two years probation.

According to public salary records, Sanders was making $44,495 per year working as a clerical assistant for the mayor’s office. The median salary in Washington, D.C., is around $90,000.

Czin did not respond to request for comment about whether Sanders is still an employee at the mayor’s office.
