Rep. Renee Ellmers called emails alleging she is having an affair with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy “batshit crazy” behind closed doors in a meeting with House Republicans Friday.

Sources inside the meeting told the Associated Press the North Carolina Republican apologized for any emails they might have received about the alleged fair, calling such emails “batshit crazy.” She also thanked them for their “prayers and support,” and said it’s hard being a woman in Washington, but she’s a “tough cookie.”

McCarthy was the frontrunner to replace House Speaker John Boehner, until he abruptly dropped out of the race Thursday. McCarthy said the allegations had no bearing on his decision to bow out of the race.

He and Ellmers both maintain their relationship is strictly professional.

Ellmers’ attorney sent a “cease and desist” letter to GotNews.com over an article written in September alleging the lawmakers had been carrying on an extramarital relationship since 2011.

“I will be praying for those who find it acceptable to bear false witness,” Ellmers added in a statement following the meeting.
