The head of former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s presidential campaign in Virginia has been arrested on two counts of possessing child pornography.

According to police, Michael Teegarden, who lives in the suburbs of Richmond, was involved in trading pornographic images of children over a file sharing network. Police raided his house and arrested him Thursday morning.

Teegarden is a businessman and once worked as a teacher and assistant principal. But he is most notable for serving as the Virginia chairman of O’Malley’s long-shot presidential bid. His Twitter profile shows a flurry of activity on O’Malley’s behalf, all the way up to early Thursday morning, just hours before police arrested him.

“We’re horrified by these allegations, and if he is found guilty he should be punished to the full extent of the law,” O’Malley spokeswoman Haley Morris said in a statement. “He is no longer a volunteer, and we have severed all ties with him immediately.”

Virginia law punishes child pornography possession with up to five years in prison or more if the accused is involved with distribution in any capacity.
