WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden was overheard by reporters Wednesday saying to Jeff Zients, the director of the U.S. National Economic Council, that his gaffes are a way of telling the truth.

Biden began talking about transportation issues with Zients, a subject he is particularly passionate about. According to the White House pool report, Biden said he is upset at the way some political leaders have been dragging their feet on the issue.

The report continues to describe that Biden also at times “lowers his voice to a whisper, theatrically, to make a point. At one point he sweeps his hand in the direction of several photographers and cameramen standing near the windows. ‘There’s another Biden gaffe,’ he said – as if he’s throwing a toy to them. ‘When you tell the truth in Washington, it’s a gaffe.’”

Biden — known for his numerous gaffes — told reporters that he thought “everyone of those folks did well” at the Democratic debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Biden has yet to announce his candidacy, but Stephen Gardner, an executive with Amtrak, told reporters at the White House he doesn’t think Biden will announce his candidacy.
