One of the more dramatic moments of Hillary Clinton’s testimony Thursday in front of the House Select Committee on Benghazi came when the former secretary of state said she could not remember when she last spoke to Ambassador Chris Stevens.

“Did you ever talk to Ambassador Stevens when all of this was going on in the hotbed of Libya?” Indiana Rep. [crscore]Susan Brooks[/crscore] asked. “That is a yes or no question, Madam Secretary. Did you ever personally speak to [Ambassador Stevens] after you swore him in in May [2012]? Yes or no, please.”

“Yes, I believe I did,” Clinton said.

“And when was that?” asked Brooks.

“I don’t recall,” Clinton responded.

Clinton’s inability to remember if and when she spoke to Stevens lies in stark contrast to her claims Thursday that she did everything she could to monitor the precarious situation in Libya. She called Stevens her friend and spoke fondly of him at times. But the fact  that she did not check in on him personally was a recurring theme in Thursday’s marathon hearing.
