A man was charged $48,000 by a Massachusettes towing company for pulling a stuck car out of a mud pit.

Joel Ramer was off-roading with his girlfriend in a town outside Boston when his Jeep got stuck in a mud pit, according to the Associated Press. Ramer called Assured Collision to pull the car from the sludge, but was shocked when he got the massive bill.

“When I went to pick up the vehicle from Assured Collision, he’d informed me there was some damage done to the vehicle, but didn’t get into details. He also informed me the bill was $48,000,” Ramer told WFXT-TV. “I thought they made a mistake.”

It reportedly took 12 hours to pull the car from the muck. Once it was on solid ground, mechanics told Ramer the Jeep had extensive and costly damages — ones that will probably keep him from repairing the car.

Regardless, Ramer is still on the hook for the staggering bill, and will not be receiving any aid from his insurance company. (RELATED: Teen Sees Spider On Her Lap While Driving, Absolutely Loses Her Mind And Causes A Four-Car Pile Up)

The Statewide Towing Association plans to investigate the situation, and told WFXT-TV the rates appear to be higher than average.
