Luke Schemm — a 17-year-old senior at Wallace County High School (KS) — passed away Tuesday night after collapsing during a playoff football.

According to Buzzfeed, Schemm was airlifted to a hospital in Denver where doctors determined he “suffered trauma to the brain,” resulting in swelling and loss of blood flow.

“A beautiful gift from God was taken away from Lisa an [sic] I last night,” David Schemm, Luke’s father, wrote on Facebook. “Thank you to everyone for your prayers an [sic] reaching out to is [sic]. Please continue to reach out to us, it is going to be a very difficult time for us, an [sic] we will only be able to make it thru [sic] with the help of God, family, friends, an [sic] community.”

A two way star, Schemm also played basketball at Wallace County High. A spokesman for the school said that referees “didn’t see Schemm sustain any head contact during the game.”
