A Tulsa man died Sunday morning after he was shot trying to break into a house, and then crashed the getaway car trying to escape.

Police say the unnamed intruder approached the front of the house and briefly spoke with the homeowner. After the homeowner shut the door in his face, the intruder went to the back of the house where he tried to break his way through the door. The homeowner shot the intruder four times, according to Tulsa World.

After getting shot, the intruder fled in a gray SUV — which he then crashed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 3-year-old child was found in the SUV, but was not hurt in the car crash. (RELATED: Texan Blows Away Crooks, Foils Home Invasion)

Sgt. Dave Walker of the Tulsa Police Department Homicide Unit said the homeowner and the intruder knew each other and told Tulsa World, “They had been dealing with each other for a while.”

A woman who lived in the house was in a relationship with the intruder, according to the report, but it ended almost a year ago. It is unclear why the intruder attempted to break into the home or what brought him there. But Walker indicated that it is unlikely that the homeowner will face charges because Oklahoma state law allows for the use of deadly force if an individual believes they are in danger. “Right now it doesn’t look like he planned for this guy to come over and kick in his door,” Walker told Tulsa World.

The shooter’s house had also been broken into earlier on Sunday, and multiple TVs were stolen. Police haven’t confirmed the intruder was also responsible for the burglaries, but did say that there was “some indication that he may have been responsible.”
