Sen. Bernie Sanders accused former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of being in the pocket of big banks and Wall Street during Saturday’s Democratic debate, yet Clinton defended herself in a rather unconventional manner.
Sanders asked Clinton why big banks and investors “make millions of dollars of campaign contributions,” before explaining that “they expect to get something. Everybody knows that.”
Clinton, however, took issue with Sanders’ characterization.
“Wait a minute Senator. Not only do I have hundreds of thousands of donors — most of them small — and I’m proud that for the very first time, a majority of my donors are women,” Clinton said.
Additionally, she noted that she “represented New York on 9/11.”
“We were we attacked in downtown Manhattan, where Wall Street is,” Clinton explained. “I did spend a whole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild. It was good for New York. It was good for the economy, and it was a way to rebuke the terrorists.”
