The Smallest Studio In DC Still Probably Costs More Than Your Mortgage

A house near Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., is noted as the smallest in the city, but rent will still run you more than the average American mortgage payment.

The 252 square foot studio will be available Nov. 15, and rent is set at $1,400 per month. According to the listing on Craigslist, that $1,400 rent payment will secure “a very small studio” a few blocks north east of Capitol Hill.

“This is essentially THE SMALLEST TINIEST DINKIEST MOST RIDICULOUS ABSURD MINI-DEMI-PSEUDO-SILLYHOUSE IN WASHINGTON,” the for rent ad reads. “Did I mention it’s small? 252 square feet–9.5 feet wide, 28 feet long. It’s the smallest house in DC! But it’s bright and funky, and perfect for someone as cool as you.”

In 2012, the national average for a monthly mortgage payment was just $1,061 for a 30-year mortgage at 4 percent, according to LendingTree, an online banking company.

A recent report from Zumper, an online rental guide, shows that the nation’s capital is one of the most expensive places to rent an apartment in the country.

According to the report, D.C. ranks as the fourth most expensive rental market in the country. Only San Francisco, New York City and Boston had higher average rents than D.C.

The average price for a one-bedroom apartment in D.C. is $2,000.

The smallest house in the city comes complete with a mini-stove, a mini-bathroom and a mini-washer and dryer. It also boasts a back yard and off-street parking, which are rare ammenities in the city.
