“Zoolander 2” hasn’t even made it to theaters yet, but the Ben Stiller film is already being slammed by critics who think it’s “transphobic” and “sexist.”
An LGBT activist started a petition against the film because Benedict Cumberbatch’s character makes a “mockery of trans people,” she says.
“Cumberbatch’s character is clearly portrayed as an over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals,” Sarah Rose said. “This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority.”
“It also takes aim at so many different stereotypes, not just one trans character,” she added. “I think that ultimately, the established trans community is fighting to simply fit in and to be treated equally.”
10,000 people have signed the petition so far and are calling for a boycott. (RELATED: Caitlyn Jenner Says ‘Transphobic’ Halloween Costume Isn’t Offensive)
