President Barack Obama doubled-down on arguments that global warming is the greatest national security threat facing America, arguing global warming causes the rise of “dangerous” ideologies.

“What we know is that — as human beings are placed under strain, then bad things happen,” Obama told CBS Friday. “And, you know, if you look at world history, whenever people are desperate, when people start lacking food, when people — are not able to make a living or take care of their families — that’s when ideologies arise that are dangerous.”

Obama and his environmentalist allies argue global warming will cause more frequent and intense extreme weather events, like droughts, that will strain the resources of poor countries and allow extremist groups to rise. Secretary of State John Kerry even argued global warming was a cause of the Syrian civil war and the rise of ISIS.

Bill Nye “the Science Guy” recently told The Huffington Post it’s “very reasonable” to link global warming to terrorism.

“You can make a very reasonable argument that climate change is not that indirectly related to terrorism,” says Nye. “This is just the start of things. The more we let [climate change] go on, the more trouble there’s going to be.”

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump lambasted Obama calling global warming the country’s greatest national security threat as “one of the dumbest statements I’ve ever heard in politics.”

Obama fired back at Trump in the CBS interview, saying, “Mr. Trump should run back a tape or quote on some of the stuff he’s said.”

“Ninety-nine-point-five percent of scientists in the world say this is a really urgent problem,” Obama says. “Political parties around the world. The only people who are still disputing it are either some Republicans in Congress or — folks on the campaign trail.”

“And when I’m holdin’ that little hand and — or pushin’ that kid on a swing — he or she — are able to enjoy that sunny day — and feel good about it and breathe clean air and go swimming in an ocean and… I can watch ’em play — that’ll be a pretty good legacy,” Obama says. “I’ll feel pretty good about that.”
