Sanders: 1 Percent Are ‘Hell-Bent’ On Causing Global Warming
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is blaming global warming on the “one percent,” according to a 16-page plan released Monday.
“Let’s be clear: the reason we haven’t solved climate change isn’t because we aren’t doing our part, it’s because a small subsection of the one percent are hell-bent on doing everything in their power to block action. Sadly, they have deliberately chosen to put their profits ahead of the health of our people and planet” according to an update on Sanders’ website.
Sanders claims that “CEOs are raking in record profits while climate change ravages our planet and our people — all because the wealthiest industry in the history of our planet has bribed politicians into complacency in the face of climate change.”
The first section of Sanders’ plan revolves entirely around banning oil, coal, and natural gas lobbyist from the White House. The second, third, and fourth sections are essentially a reprisal of President Obama’s Clean Power Plan and call for more investment in wind and solar energy.
According to analysis of Environmental Protection Agency models by the libertarian Cato Institute, the Clean Power Plan would only avert only 0.019 degrees Celsius of warming by the year 2100 — an amount so small that it couldn’t be detected. The Clean Power Plan is projected to cost a staggering $41 billion annually according to a study by NERA Economic Consulting.
Sanders’ plan finally claims “climate change is one of the great security issues facing this planet. As we see more and more drought, as people around the world are unable to grow the food they need to survive, people will migrate for survival. Instability can cause international conflict.”
The alleged link between global warming and terrorism has been repeatedly debunked. Research shows terrorism is far more closely associated with separatist movements, religious extremism, weak governing systems, and a lack of political legitimacy over environmental conditions ostensibly caused by global warming. The increase of global surface temperature by 0.8°C over the last 125 years likely isn’t driving increased conflict or terrorism.
