An Illinois man pleaded guilty Wednesday to planning an attack on a U.S. military base and trying to help his cousin travel overseas to fight with Islamic State.
Jonas M. Edmonds, 30, was arrested in March for plotting to attack the U.S. Army National Guard base in Joliet, Ill.. His cousin, Hasan Edmonds, was in the Army National Guard and they planned to get Jonas a military uniform to wear during the attack and a hit list of officers to target.
Jonas planned to carry out the attack after Hasan went overseas to fight with ISIS. Jonas tried to help Hasan travel overseas to fight with ISIS because, according to the Department of Justice, he believed “that anyone who supported a mujahid (a fighter) was a mujahid himself,” and thus got credit before Allah.
Hasan has been charged with one count of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
Edmonds also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to provide material support to Islamic State and one count of making a materially false statement to a law enforcement officer regarding an offense involving international terrorism.
Fox News learned in November that the FBI monitors nearly 50 ISIS suspects 24/7 with large, hi-tech teams of agents. There are as many as 1,000 active ISIS suspects in the U.S.
