Leonardo DiCaprio and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met at the climate summit in Paris to discuss possible solutions to global warming.

DiCaprio, who is a longtime advocate of climate justice issues, and former senator and presidential candidate Kerry joined hundreds of political functionaries, celebrities, and politicians this week at the COP21 (Conference of Paris) summit in France. The attendees at the conference plan on discussing ways to fight global warming.

“Great to see my friend @LeoDiCaprio at — one of the most committed advocates for our ocean and our planet,” Kerry wrote in a tweet to his followers, which included a photo of the meeting. “Great seeing you, too. Thank you @JohnKerry for all you’re doing at ” The Revenant actor responded the diplomat Tuesday.

“Our world leaders are here in Paris in an effort to finalize a global agreement 20 years in the making, to finally address the very real threat that climate change poses to our planet,” DiCaprio told other attendees at the summit, which included mayors from around the world.

“These leaders have met before. They met in Kyoto, they met in Copenhagen, and in cities on every continent, but each and every time, they have come up short. This time must be different, because we are fundamentally running out of time,” he added.

In July, the actor pledged $15 million in donations to more than 30 environmental and sustainability organizations working to achieve “innovative and impactful conservation projects around the globe.”

The Oscar-nominated star’s namesake charity, The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, has also awarded grants to environmental groups such as National Geographic: Pristine Seas, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The actor and activist sits on the WWF’ board.

DiCaprio told an audience at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation awards last week that he experienced global warming firsthand while filming The Revenant. “Our team endured two unprecedented weather events that shut down the already-delayed and complicated production schedule, which I’m sure you’ve heard about,” he said.

“Turbulent and disruptive weather events are happening all over the world and are causing irreparable damage. 2015 has literally become the tipping point for climatic instability and it’s incredibly scary,” the actor warned.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), considered the world’s top climate authority among  environmentalists and scientists, disagrees with DiCaprio’s meteorological assessment.
